"Inflammaging": the quiet driver of how fast you age

Chronic, low-grade inflammation is one of the most powerful forces shaping how you age. The good news: your immune system holds the dial — and you have more control over it than you think.

There's a word longevity researchers use that most of my patients have never heard: inflammaging. It's a blend of "inflammation" and "aging," and it describes one of the most important — and most fixable — reasons some people stay vital into their eighties while others start slowing down in their fifties.

Here's the short version. Inflammation itself isn't the enemy. It's your immune system doing its job: rushing to a cut, fighting off a cold, cleaning up damage. That's acute inflammation, and it's supposed to switch on, do its work, and switch off. The problem is when it never fully switches off — a low, simmering, background inflammation that runs for years. That's inflammaging, and over decades it quietly wears down tissues, blood vessels, joints, and even the brain.

Why your immune system holds the dial

As we age, the immune system shifts. It becomes a little less precise and a little more "trigger-happy," releasing inflammatory signals even when there's no real threat. Add in the modern accelerants — poor sleep, chronic stress, ultra-processed food, a sedentary week, visceral fat, untreated allergies — and that simmer turns into a steady boil.

This is why I approach anti-aging from the immune system outward. If you only chase the surface — the creams, the serums — you're managing symptoms while the underlying fire keeps burning. Calm the fire, and everything downstream gets easier: your energy, your skin, your recovery, your risk of the diseases we most associate with aging.

"You can't stop aging. But you can change the pace of it — and inflammation is the pace-setter."

The five levers that actually move it

You don't need a lab full of gadgets. The most powerful anti-inflammatory tools are unglamorous, free, and backed by decades of evidence:

01
Sleep first. A single week of short sleep raises inflammatory markers measurably. It's the highest-leverage thing most people ignore.
02
Eat for your gut. A diverse, fiber-rich diet feeds the microbes that keep inflammation in check. (More on this in a dedicated piece.)
03
Move most days. Muscle is an anti-inflammatory organ. Regular movement — especially strength work — lowers the background signal.
04
Treat the hidden sources. Untreated allergies, gum disease, and chronic stress are inflammation you can often turn off at the source.
05
Know your numbers. Simple markers like hs-CRP can show whether your efforts are working — a far better guide than guessing.
Myth vs. Fact
"Anti-inflammatory supplements are the answer."

A few have real, modest evidence — but no capsule outperforms sleep, movement, and a gut-friendly plate. Supplements are the last 10%, not the first. Be especially skeptical of anything sold with a countdown timer.

The takeaway

Aging is inevitable; the speed of it is negotiable. Inflammaging is the negotiation. You don't need to overhaul your life this week — pick one lever, do it consistently, and let it compound. That's not a hack. It's how longevity actually works.
